Barnsbury St. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Aria, No. 2 Barnsbury St was an old church hall where we had to keep the old hall roof and 3 walls and build a new basement, a new shop front, a new ground floor cafe to the side of the hall, an office and 2 flats above the shop . The hall had to be underpinned and a new steel frame erected to support the new shop front , office and flats . The hall was simply repaired and strengthened , all the brickwork and the roof timbers where left exposed and not decorated as a contrast to the new building which now surrounds it . The shop front, office and flats are all a modern finish with timber floors and plenty glass walls to allow as much light as possible into the building.
Napenthe. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Napenthe is a new house built on a cliff overlooking the beach in Pett Level on the south coast. There was an old house on the site which we removed before building a new timber framed house. The house sits on a steel frame which in turn sits on micropile foundations. The front of the house and the extensive decking sit at various heights above the slopping site as if on stilts, this gives great views over the beach below. This house may look like a simple timber beach hut but it is extremely well insulated and with an air heat exchanger supplying heat through the underfloor heating and hot water, it is also eco-friendly. This was a very interesting project due to the location and the fact that the only access for material was to have a crane on the beach to lift everything to site.
